Historic Pioneer with Noble Connections
Bordering the Peak District, pioneering Derby was the site of the first factory during the Industrial Revolution. The city was a silk producer and a former mill forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Derwent Valley Mills, lining the Derwent River between Derby and Matlock.
Also by the river is Darley Park which hosts an annual chamber orchestra concert. The city centre arboretum was England’s first public park, and Markeaton Park in the north-west has a light railway. Nearby is the university campus and 18th-century Kedleston Hall, a Palladian-style mansion involved in filming of ‘The Duchess’.
Another royal connection is Bonnie Prince Charlie who stayed at Exeter House. A replica of his room is in Derby Museum and Art Gallery, and there is a statue of him in Cathedral Square. Opposite is the oldest pub, the Dolphin Inn, but the best nightlife is around Friar Gate.
The nearby Cathedral Quarter is full of eateries and shops, and the Westfield Centre houses big name brands. The Grade II-listed Market Hall offers a range of stalls above underground tunnels which are supposedly haunted by one of Derby’s many ghosts.
Derby County FC play at Pride Park, near the train station and several hotels with parking. Booking.com also offers cheap apartments and guest houses near East Midlands Airport.

We'd only planned on a visit for the night to get a live band gig in. Wish we'd been able to stay longer to look around a bit. Hotel was lovely, old building. Staff were friendly and very helpful.

The art gallery was interesting, especially the surrealist paintings. I highly recommend the Kedleston Hall! The staffs there were really helpful and informative, and the elegant interior design is especial. The Pickford’s House is interesting too, because there’re many grand upper-class mansions open to tourists but not homey middle-class houses like this. We loved the cathedral and old quarter, we loved the Book Café which we visited three times in three days! We loved all the little shops and cafes near the Cathedral up Saddlers street? Compact city with a mixture of old and new...something for everyone. Ideal for exploring Peak District, Alton Towers etc. Markeaton Park is pretty and a haven on the edge of the city. The sink had the worse drainage system for water collected on its surface. All that water falls down as a stream on your foot. Other than that good hotel. Good breakfast. They made vegetarian sausages for us . The spread was good and we had a good breakfast. Staff was friendly, rooms tidy. Dedicated car park with barrier. The location is just near the Derby train station and city centre. Good rates for value

It is very convenient for traveller. The reception and bar areas seem renovated since my last stay at the same time last year. On the whole the hotel is clean and nicely kept. Check in was quick and when I arrived in my room there was a note from Claudia saying I was a chosen guest for that day and had little treats awaiting for me. Was a nice touch. Rooms clean and bed was very comfortable, slept well. Breakfast was lovely with plenty of selection. Hotel was very close to Derby centre and u could walk to other bars and restaurants.
